Upper edge of cliff face, just starting to steepen towards the edge. Kelp park in the surge zone with hydroids and bryozoans, Alcyonium digitatum, Sagartia elegans, Delessaria sanguinea and filamentous and foliose red algae. Nudibranchs common on hydroids and bryozoans. |

Wide deep gulley affected by wave surge- Laminaria hyperborea over the upper half of the gulley sides with a mixture of foliose algae and encrusting bryozoans over the lower half, but increasingly bare towards the base of the gulley which was filled with rounded boulders and cobbles (devoid of life except Electra pilosa). There was an increase in surge effects towards the inner end of the gulley where some polyclinids were present. Mytilus edulis was increasingly common in shallower water amongst the kelp. Isolated rock faces with the gullies had a hydroid/barnacle cover with many Leucosolenia botryoides. |

Kelp forest of short stocky Laminaria hyperborea in the upper infralittoral on exposed bedrock. Areas of vertical bedrock with colonial ascidians, bryozoan crusts and coralline crusts. Large number and high diversity of nudibranchs on these vertical surfaces. Kelp stipes and understorey flora fairly rich, not as grazed as the lower zones appeared. Upper reaches of the zone had Alaria esculenta whereas lower limits had patches of Desmarestia aculeata. (Dense band of Mytilus edulis from 2 m BSL to the surface). |

Main substratum was bedrock plains and short vertical and overhanging surfaces with few boulders and smaller stones. Flustra foliacea was present in large patches, with Alcyonium digitatum on edges and verticals with Abietinaria abietina and sparse Hydrallmania falcata in similar areas. Much of the rock with large boring bivalves, possibly Pholas sp. and Hiatella arctica. |
