The upper shore of this area ( stations 91 - 101 ) is of cobble and pebble only. This zone extends down to the upper limit of the Fucus vesiculosus at 100 - 101 and further down into the Fucus serratus zone between 97 - 99. The lower shore is of muddy sand overlying a bed of small gravel. The mud depth varies from about 0.5 cm to 12- 15 cm. This precluded taking samples from the area with the thinnest cover, e.g. between stations 98. and 99. The whole area is flat and well covered by seaweeds, with Laminaria digitata, L. saccharina, Fucus serratus, Fucus vesiculosus, Ascophylum nodosum, Fucus spiralis and Pelvetia on all available stones and boulders, often giving 100 % cover. The mud is colonised extensively by Arenicola at densities varying from 10 - 15/ m2 of large specimens to more than 100/ m2 of small specimens, giving 100 % cover in all available areas. Zostera is present over the entire mud area. Superficial aeration only. |
