The pool base usually consisted of shelly coarse sand with small very mobile boulders. Some large >50cm boulders were present. Corallinaceae crusts and Corallina officinalis were characteristic of these pools with a sparse underboulder community.

Substratum stable. Asterias rubens found in shaded overhangs. Sand at bottom of rockpools visible, not too overcrowded with seaweeds, the most obvious ones being Corallina officinalis, Ulva sp., Enteromorpha sp., Cladostephus spongiosus along with Actinia equina. Small boulders scattered around rockpools.

Outcrops of new red sandstone in sandy beach with occasional boulders. Fucus dominated with Cladostephus spongiosus and Mastocarpus stellatus. Rocks with many fissures and overhangs at sand level due to scouring. Underboulder scarce but reasonably diverse. Sabellaria alveolata abundant, often forming cushion reefs.

The boulders are highly mobile with a poor fauna and nearly no algae. Nucella lapillus were abundant and feeding on the few patches of Semibalanus balanoides. On the western side of the spit near the shore species diversity and abundance increased. Abundant Mytilus edulis spat with superabundant Nucella lapillus were present.
