1002 Cumbria Barrow in Furness 2 Barrow-in-Furness 69 03.08.95 Lies along the SE side of Walney Island and encompasses the major portion of the South Walney saltmarshes. One private owner relating to part of the unit. Remainder is unclaimed and has been referred to the Commons Commissioner. 72 A minor, metalled road runs almost the entire landward length of the common. This provides access to a campsite at the south of Walney Island and also to a refuse tip on the western side. There appears to be a public footpath crossing the sands of Tummer Marsh between the village of Biggar and Water Garth Nook, although this is probably rarely (if ever) walked. This northern section of the common lies adjacent to a large housing estate and there appears to be public access onto parts of the marsh adjacent to houses. The main body, however, is probably seldom visited by the public. The more southerly parts of the common are also probably rarely visited.
