Lack of data

Hi Baz,

As far as I can tell there is no central source of reliable statistics or data on compulsory purchase orders in the UK.

Compulsory purchase orders are a local planning power. Some councils do provide information on their websites when they make compulsory purchases, usually in the context of large developments. However that only provides a limited amount of anecdotal information.

Thanks owen.

Although I believe that local governments apply for a compulsory purchase order and that a government minister either oks it or rejects it.

Do you think its worth trying to a request the data?

Compulsory purchase orders

Yes, I think that's right; a Government minister still has to confirm each CPO.

In principle that should make it easier to get the information, because you could request a list of confirmed CPOs from the relevant Government department. In the case of CPOs initiated by councils in England that department should normally be the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

However other public authorities, such as the Highways Agency, have the power to make CPOs, so there are quite a few ministers in other departments who can confirm them.

I do not have any strong sense of how easy it would be to get this information. It depends on exactly what you want and how you want to use it. It would probably be difficult to make a request for Government to publish details of all CPOs as a single dataset, if there is not currently any public authority responsible for pulling together that information.

If you only want access to the information, rather than the right to re-use it under an open data licence, submitting a Freedom of Information request (to FoIrequests@communities.gsi.gov.uk, initially) is probably the approach with the greatest likelihood of success.

However it would not hurt to also make a data request via the ODUG process. So far that process has not produced many open data releases but it would at least highlight the fact that information about CPOs is not as readily available as it should be.

Once again thank you very

Once again thank you very much. You've been a great help.

I was going to re-use the data via a informational website.  With the impeding development of the new train line, hs2, I thought it woukd be useful as it could effect thousands of home and landowners.

I will make a request via ODUG, just incase.

Thanks again Owen.
