The interpretation was based on a variety of data sourced from within the British Geological Survey and externally. Data consulted includes archive sample and seismic records, side scan sonar, multibeam bathymetry and Olex datasets. The distribution of hard substrate at the seabed, or within 0.5 m is important in dictating the benthic assemblages found in certain areas. Therefore, an understanding of the distribution of these substrates is of primary importance in marine planning and designation of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) under the Marine and Coastal Access Act, 2009. In addition, a number of other users will value these data, including marine renewable companies, aggregate companies, the fishing and oil and gas industries. In order to address this issue it was necessary to update British Geological Survey sea-bed mapping to delineate areas where rock, boulders or cobbles are present at, or within 0.5m of the sea-bed surface. A polygon shape file showing areas of rock or hard substrate at, or within 0.5m of the sea-bed has been developed. The dataset has been created as vector polygons and are available in a range of GIS formats, including ArcGIS (.shp), ArcInfo Coverages and MapInfo (.tab). More specialised formats may be available but may incur additional processing costs.2019-02-18T16:41:31.837935+00:00https://ckan.publishing.service.gov.uk/dataset/c902e364-cce5-40c4-8b7b-9e94ba3ccf95British Geological Survey (BGS) Sampling Survey 1988/3: West of Scotland (08/Sep/1988 to 25/Sep/1988)2024-03-22T15:37:03.968993+00:00This marine sampling survey took place in September 1988 West of Scotland on board the drill ship Bucentaur. During approximately 2.5 months, near-continuous leakage of large amounts of natural gas was released into the subsurface. After the blowout, the local drinking water production company installed a network of groundwater monitoring wells to monitor for possible adverse effects on groundwater quality at the blowout site. Today, more than 50 years after the blowout, the groundwater is still impaired. Data has been correlated with previously published data by Schout et al. (2018) covering description of geology and well depths. During October 2019 we sampled from 12 groundwater wells covering: - Inorganic parameters (hydrocarbons, anions, cations, DOC, alkalinity, nitrate and ammonium) - DNA (quantification of total bacteria by qPCR 16S, aerobic methane oxidation by qPCR pmoA, and anaerobic methane oxidation by qPCR mcrA) The dataset was created within SECURe project (Subsurface Evaluation of CCS and Unconventional Risks) - https://www.securegeoenergy.eu/. During approximately 25 months, near-continuous leakage of large amounts of natural gas was released into the subsurface. During two fieldtrips (November 2019 & October 2020) water samples were collected from several wells covering: - Bulk gas compositions (methane, ethane, propane, oxygen, nitrogen, CO2, Argon). Bulk isotope compositions of methane (δ13C & δH), carbon dioxide (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). - Methane clumped isotope compositions (ΔCD & ΔDD). - Inorganic parameters (hydrocarbons, anions, cations, DOC, alkalinity, nitrate and ammonium). The dataset was created within SECURe project (Subsurface Evaluation of CCS and Unconventional Risks) - https://www.securegeoenergy.eu/. Basing on raw data and other information pertaining to two shale gas wells, acquired from Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) input to the well integrity simulations carried out by TNO was supplied by PIG-PIB. The input consisted in elaborating generalized models of the wells and their surroundings as wells as characterization of the target formations. Well construction schemes including the production casing sizes and depths and generalized lithostratigraphy of the geological formations in question were composed. Raw data acquired from PGNiG included wireline logging data (and interpretation results) together with results of laboratory measurements of drill core samples (e.g., on geomechanical properties). Regarding characterization of the target formations the most important information created were distributions of in situ stresses within particular formations in both wells, assessed on the base of results of wireline, density logging (vertical stress – based on weight of the overburden at a certain depth) and laboratory measurements of geomechanical parameters (horizontal stress – based on pressure values measured within rock sample in tri-axial chamber at reservoir conditions). Temperature values within formations in question were assessed assuming local geothermal gradient and information from PGNiG reports. The dataset was created within SECURe project (Subsurface Evaluation of CCS and Unconventional Risks) - https://www.securegeoenergy.eu/. The command-line functionality is grouped in a lightweight package called IsoplotR, which has minimal dependencies and works on a basic R installation. It only uses commands that have been part of the R programming language for many decades and are unlikely to change in the future. In contrast, the GUI is written in html and Javascript and interacts with IsoplotR via an interface library. This interface is currently provided by the shiny package. shiny is free, open, and popular among R developers but has two important limitations: (1) it was created and is owned by a private company, which reduces the software’s future proofness; (2) shiny is a rather ‘bloated’ piece of code that does much more than is needed for IsoplotRgui. To avoid these issues, shinylight is a light-weight alternative to shiny that allows websites to call R functions in a similar fashion to the way in which node.js allows websites to use Javascript as a server language. Shinylight has been integrated in IsoplotRgui and all future software deliverables of the ‘Beyond Isoplot’ project, including the upcoming 'simplex' program for SIMS data processing.2022-02-09T22:02:00.681064+00:00https://ckan.publishing.service.gov.uk/dataset/df6bec2d-87e6-45f2-b51f-58a5be702388Affects of leakage on ground stability2024-03-22T15:47:13.422119+00:00This national digital GIS product produced by the British Geological Survey indicates the potential for leakage to have a negative effect on ground stability. It is largely derived from the digital geological map and expert knowledge. The GIS dataset contains seven fields. The first field is a summary map that gives an overview of where leakage may affect ground stability. The other six fields indicate the properties of the ground with respect to the extent to which hazards associated with soluble rocks, landslides, compressible ground, collapsible ground, swelling clays and running sands will be increased due to leakage. The data is useful to asset managers in water companies, local authorities and utility companies who would like to understand where. and to what extent, leaking underground pipes or other structures may initate or worsen ground stability.2014-02-03T16:01:04.181603+00:00https://ckan.publishing.service.gov.uk/dataset/2eb54104-660b-4a2a-84c1-ee7b9425f2bdOffshore Activity2024-03-26T14:02:52.951592+00:00<h4 style='margin:0.375rem 0px 0.75rem;'><font color='#000000' size='3'><span style='font-weight:400;'>This interactive map has been produced by the NSTA to assist companies and members of the public with information that will help them understand offshore activities in the UK’s Territorial Sea and its designated Continental Shelf (“the offshore area”). Data are provided by Water and Sewerage Companies (WaSCs) to the Environment Agency each year as part of their regulatory Annual Return, to fulfil their permitted conditions to discharge from these storm overflows under the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
Data files are provided by year (2023, 2022, 2021 & 2020) and include a sheet for each of the 10 WaSCs with storm overflows in England. Each WaSC sheet shows how often and how long each monitored storm overflow discharged during that year. From 2021 onwards the dataset also includes reasons why event duration monitors (EDM) may have provided information for <90% of the relevant return period, and why an overflow may have high spill counts in that period. These data reflect the best available information held by the WaSC at time of submission.
The data file for each year also contains key summary data tables. These include: number of storm overflows with EDM, number of storm overflows returning spill counts, average spill duration and average spill count for each WaSC. A dataset README guide is also provided which provides further information to help use and understand the data.
A fifth data file contains the annual key summary data from respective years plus a table showing long-term trends from 2016-2023.
