Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) is an airborne mapping technique, which uses a laser to measure the height of the terrain and surface objects on the ground such as trees and buildings. Hundreds of thousands of measurements per second are made of the ground allowing highly detailed elevation models to be generated at spatial resolutions of between 25cm and 2 metres. Our LIDAR DTM (Digital Terrain Model) time stamped tiles product is a 'bare earth' model with surface objects filtered out of the DSM by applying bespoke software techniques to leave the best representation of the terrain of the ground. For each Digital Surface Model supplied a coincident digital terrain model is also available. Supplied as individual ASCII files labelled by Ordinance Survey grid reference the DTM product may be available at 2m, 1m, 50cm and 25cm resolutions. Historic data are available for some areas where we have carried out repeat surveys, such as in the coastal zone for monitoring change. All LIDAR data has a vertical accuracy of +/-15cm RMSE.

To download data please visit the Open Data Portal: Data is available in 5km download zip files for each year of survey. Within each downloaded zip file are ASCII files aligned to the Ordinance Survey grid. The size of each tile is dependant upon the spatial resolution of the data. Elevation values are presented in millimetres.

Catalogue shapefiles of data extent are available via the resource locator link below. The catalogue shapefiles contain metadata for each tile including the start and and date flown of a survey and spatial resolution.
