Description
This dataset is an archived dataset and has not been updated since June 2008.
The Woodland Grant Scheme (WGS) provides incentives for
people to create and manage woodlands on sites all over Great Britain.
The Forestry Commission pays grants for establishing and looking after woodlands
and forests. To qualify for grant the applicant must meet the standards of
environmental protection and practice set out in the Forestry Commission's
guidelines. WGS3 has been operative since September 1994.
WGS 3 closed for new applications on 1st September 2006 and
has been replaced by Better Woods for Wales( BWfW) which is
the new grant scheme for creating and improving woodlands in Wales.
Contents of the dataset:
The dataset identifies areas approved by grant type within each WGS scheme
boundary. The list below provides a summary of the grant types captured:
SCHEME BOUNDARY -
The boundary of the area(s) included within the scheme (contract).
NEW PLANTING APPROVED -
file://C:\Temp\metadata22.htm 22/03/2011
Areas within the contract where new planting has been approved under NP, NB, NS,
NC, NK, NX and/or NY.
NEW NATURAL REGENERATION APPROVED -
Areas within the contract where new natural regeneration has been approved under
NN, NL and/or NZ.
REPLANTING/RESTOCKING/MANAGEMENT -
Areas within the contract where replanting or restocking has been approved under
RP, RC or RQ.
RESTOCKING BY NATURAL REGENERATION -
Areas within the contract where restocking by natural regeneration has been
approved under RN or EN.
ANNUAL MANAGEMENT GRANT -
Areas within the contract approved for Annual Management Grant payment. AMG is
intended to assist with the costs of maintaining and improving woodland and for
creating or enhancing public access.
COMMUNITY FOREST PREMIUM -
Areas within the contract approved for Community Forest Premium (CF PREM). This
payment provides an additional incentive for the planting of new woodlands in
specially targeted areas.
WOODLAND IMPROVEMENT GRANT -
Areas within the contract approved for Woodland Improvement Grant. This is a single
payment made to encourage a range of work in existing woodlands and bring them
back into management or where the opportunity arises, to undertake work which will
enhance the value of the woodland for conservation, landscape or recreation.
WIG is currently divided into three categories - -
WIG1 for Public Access
WIG2 for Undermanaged Woodlands
WIG3 for Biodiversity.
LIVESTOCK EXCLUSION ANNUAL PREMIUM (1st January 2000 On)
Areas within the contract approved for Livestock Exclusion Annual Premium (LEAP)
paid to compensate the farmer for the loss of revenue through excluding agricultural
stock from woodlands. To qualify, an area must be within either a Less Favoured
Area (LFA) or an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA). The grant may only be paid
if agricultural stock is preventing the regeneration of woodland.
COMMUNITY WOODLAND CONTRIBUTION -
Areas within the contract approved for Community Woodland Contribution. CWC is
available to encourage the creation of new woodlands near towns and cities which
can be used for informal recreation.
FELLING (1st April 1998 On) -
Areas within the contract approved for clear felling. Following a change in the law on
1st April 1998, WGS was removed from felling licence exemptions and any licensable
felling within the contract must now be covered by a felling licence.
SELECTIVE FELLING (1st April 1998 On) -
Areas within the contract approved for selective felling. Following a change in the law
on 1st April 1998, WGS was removed from felling licence exemptions and any
licensable felling within the contract must now be covered by a felling licence.

Dataset Information
Data Lineage
The spatial element of this dataset has been digitised by CGIS, FCW. The
textual element has been extracted from the WGS Oracle database using
Business Objects and associated with the spatial data.
Information is mapped following final approval stage, from contract maps
supplied by the applicants (normally based on 1:2500 or 1:10,000 OS maps).
Spatial data has been digitised against OS raster backdrops using 1:25,000
scale between 1997 and 2000, and 1:10,000 scale between 2000 and 2004.
No Amendments to scheme boundaries or grant aided areas have been made
