The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive (WFD)) (England & Wales) Regulations 2017 (referred to as WFD Regulations) provide a framework for managing the water environment in England.
Under the WFD Regulations, a River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) must be developed for each River Basin District (RBD) and reviewed and updated every six years. These plans were first published in December 2009, and last updated in February 2016. As part of the 3 cycle RBMPs we are to report an inventory of emissions and discharges of all priority substances.
Better understanding of the sources of priority substances and the ways in which pollution occurs will help to target measures to phase-out emissions or reduce pollution of the most relevant chemicals, and avoids wasted effort on chemicals of little or no relevance.
