Comments

Review status is wrong

The data requested (employers by number of staff) is not "already available". The links in the review notes are just a list of general resources on companies, employment and deprivation.

Update: Review status has been changed to "data cannot be released". Thank you.

(But why can't the data be released? Is it not held by any government department, or is there a barrier such as commercial confidentiality? I should think the necessary underlying data is most likely held by HMRC rather than BIS or DWP as suggested by the requestor.)

Data held by government is confidential

ONS has a business register (the Inter Departmental Business Register) from which it publishes a variety of aggregate statistics by size band of employer. The information about individual employers is collected on a confidential basis and only anonymised datasets can be made available.

Every little helps?

It's not exactly what was requested - and obviously covers just a specific area - but thought it worth mentioning that major private sector employers for Hampshire is available as open data. This includes estimated number of employees: http://www3.hants.gov.uk/opendata/datasets/major_ps_employers_in_hampshire.htm (don't think it's listed on data.gov.uk et - will be shortly!)
