TPR have confirmed the position has not changed since May 2013. However, to note the list of all schemes with 100 or more members is now published on EIOA’s website. This list is put together from information provided by TPR

Data request description: 
I am interested to know whether there is a public directory of the UK pension schemes(over 50,000) similar to the directory of the Companies House or similar to the directory of the Charity Commission. I wish to know : - Whether this directory of pension funds/schemes exists; - Which institution has the custody of this directory; - The content of this directory(types of data included and available); - The ways to access this directory.

TPR Register

The only dataset that really fits this description is the official register of pension schemes maintained by The Pensions Regulator (TPR).

The information contained in the TPR Register may vary depending on the type of scheme, but will usually include at minimum the name and pension scheme tax reference number, details of the trustees, employer/s, insurer (where relevant) and number of members.

All pension schemes registered with HMRC must also register with TPR. ONS has access to data from the TPR Register for purposes of producing statistics about pension schemes. TPR itself also publishes some statistics.

The TPR Register is not available to the public. According to TPR:

"Information contained in the pension scheme register is 'restricted information'. The Pensions Act 2004 places restrictions on release of information gathered in the course of our regulatory functions. Any information which falls within the definition of 'restricted' under this act will be exempt from release under the Freedom of Information Act."

(TPR maintains a separate register for stakeholder pension schemes. That registry is available to the public. However there are currently only 47 schemes on the register.)
