1981 - 1981 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) North Sea Plankton Survey - RV Cirolana 01/81
Ichthyoplankton samples were collected over three separate periods during a survey in an area 15 miles south south west of Brown Ridge in the central North Sea. As part of a number of survey objectives the distribution of early stage plaice eggs was investigated. This data consists of the numbers of plaice eggs and the larvae of herring and sprat identified from the main net samples. Positional data and volumes filtered are included.

Plankton sampling was carried out in an area 15 miles SSW of Brown Ridge using a Lowestoft 30" high speed plankton sampler and a Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder. Analysis of ichthyoplankton samples was carried out using Cefas standard methods and identification guides. Fish eggs and larvae were picked out from all samples by eye and, whenever practicable, the whole sample was sorted. When sub-sampling was necessary this was done using a Folsom splitter. Data tables containing the raw analysis data have been extracted from Access database into comma separated variable files. Plankton data are normally expressed as either number of organisms per m3 or per m2. The number per m3 is obtained by dividing the numbers per sample by the volume filtered, calculated from the sampler flowmeters. Number per m2 is obtained by multiplying the number per m3 by the mean sampled depth during a deployment.
