Chester Archaeological Period Characterisations: Saxon
The Chester Archaeological Period Characterisations were created as part of the Chester Urban Archaeological Database (UAD) Project and encompass the Chester non parish area and civil parishes of Chester Castle and Great Boughton. The Chester Archaeological Period Characterisations were based primarily on archaeological evidence, rather than on the relatively recent historic urban development and are deliberately a broad brush characterisation for the given period. The available archaeological resource for the Saxon period is typically limited by the ephemeral nature of the resource; however, areas of Saxon settlement, industry and religious activity have been recorded along with traces of a burh defensive system.
