Cheshire Historic Environment Record: Area of Archaeological Importance Point

Alternative title(s)

Area of Archaeological Importance - Chester & Broughton

Abstract

The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 (Part II) introduced the concept of Areas of Archaeological Importance (AAI), city centres of historic significance which receive legal protection. It is an offence under the Act to undertake any operations within a designated Area of Archaeological Importance which may disturb the ground, or flood any site, or tip upon any site, without giving the administering Authority six weeks notice of the commencement of those operations. As of 2009 only five city centres, all in England, have been designated AAIs (Canterbury, Chester, Exeter, Hereford and York). This dataset indicates the central point of an Areas of Archaeological Importance polygon. This is particularly useful when Areas of Archaeological Importance need to be depicted on maps in excess of 1:10,000, as smaller areas are often no longer visible at large scales.
