EA Hydrological Boundaries

Abstract

The Hydrological Areas are a polygon dataset showing 139 hydrological units across England and parts of Wales, that have been defined by the Environment Agency. The units show areas that have broadly similar hydrological characteristics. Many of the hydrological areas are defined by surface water (river) catchments, which are areas of land from which all surface run-off flows through a series of streams, rivers and possibly lakes, to a particular point in the water course such as a river confluence. Other units are defined based on hydrogeological characteristics, where this is more appropriate, such as groundwater recharge areas. The Hydrological Areas boundaries are based on the following datasets:  WFD cycle 2 river catchments – Open Data spatial format available on data.gov.uk under OGL  WFD cycle 2 transitional – Open Data spatial format available on data.gov.uk under OGL  WFD cycle 2 management catchments – Open Data spatial format available on data.gov.uk under OGL  WFD cycle 2 groundwater – Open Data spatial format available on data.gov.uk under OGL  Statutory main rivers – Open Data spatial format available on data.gov.uk under OGL  CAMS technical boundaries – Open Data spatial format available on data.gov.uk under OGL (https://data.gov.uk/dataset/5a10b765-7eeb-4bdc-a075-70849cb0cc5e/technical-assessment-boundaries-behind-the-abstraction-licensing-strategies-cycle-2)  The SEPA boundary for the Scottish catchment, with approval from SEPA to use this dataset under OGL  BGS 50k solid geology – with approval from British Geological Survey to use this dataset
