North Sea and English Channel Sediment Pigment and Porosity Analysis
Measurements of Chlorophyll A concentrations and porosity in sediment samples collected by box core from a range of soft sediments in the English and Dutch sectors of the Greater North Sea, for three surveys on RV Cefas Endeavour (Cruise Codes CEND 15/09, CEND 11/10 and CEND 11/11).

Porosity is the fraction of void space in a material. Here the material is sediment and the voids between the sediment grains are filled with seawater. Porosity (symol Φ, phi) is expressed as the volume of the void divided by the volume of the whole sample, so is given as a fraction between 0 and 1. Intact sediment cores were either sliced in 1 cm horizons to a depth of 10 cm, or treated as two bulk samples (0-5 cm, and 5-10 cm). Porosity was calculated using the dry weight and wet weight of known volumes of sediment, assuming a sediment particle density of 2.7 g cm3 and a seawater density of 1.035 g cm3. Chlorophyll concentration was determined by Fluorometry, following a standard operating procedure. Records include data from Defra funded project ME5301 entitled 'Mapping the structure, function and sensitivity of seabed sediment habitats to support assessment of the sea-floor status and the broadscale monitoring and management of the benthic environment' which sampled locations in the North Sea and western English Channel.
