Impact of environmental radiation on the health and reproductive status of fish from Japan, 2017
Data set presents results from fish biometry field work within four lakes in Japan (Suzuuchi, Funazawa, Kashiramori, Abakuma). Data comprise sampling location, fish species, sex, length, weight (total fish, gonad and liver weight). Fish were sampled during May 2017; target species included crucian carp, common carp and smallmouth bass. For the health and reproductive status assessment, fish of similar weight and total length were collected. Gill nets (20 m length and 21 mm mesh size) were employed to ensure capture of homogeneous groups of mature fish. The work described here was conducted under the TREE project (http://tree.ceh.ac.uk/) funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, Environment Agency and Radioactive Waste Management Ltd. Fish were carefully removed from the nets and kept alive into tanks containing aerated water. Fish fell unconscious by a blow to the head and were then killed by performing a concussion of the brain to limit as much as possible the suffering as recommended by the UK Home Office procedure (Animals Scientific Procedures Act, 198618). Scales were sampled for age determination. Body weight, total length, and gonadal weight recorded for each fish. The gonads were dissected, weighted, fixed in buffered formalin solution for 24h and preserved in ethanol for later study. File uploaded is of the biometry data retrieved from the field work.
