2015 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Wyre Sound and Tingwall Maerl bed diver core survey

Abstract

Diver core survey undertaken at a Maerl beds in Wyre Sound and off Tingwall, Orkney by Heriot-Watt University for SNH on the 10th, 12th and 14th June 2015. Sampling was for the purpose of a Heriot-Watt University PhD project where SNH were the studentship partner. Replicate core samples were collected by divers at three sites in Wyre Sound and one site off Tingwall.

Diver core samples from a Maerl bed off Orkney were collected using a standard 110mm diameter core (20cm depth). In total, 16 infaunal samples were collected on this survey - four sampling stations with four replicate samples were collected per station. The locations of cores were haphazardly selected on top of a maerl wave formation where live maerl had accumulated. Precision Marine Survey Ltd. were commissioned by SNH to undertake faunal analysis of the samples. Each infaunal sample was passed through a 1mm mesh sieve and the sieve residue was retained and fixed using buffered formalin. Laboratory processing methodologies were based on best practice and followed NMBAQC guidelines.
