Drinking Water Protected Areas (Surface Water) are, within the Water Framework Directive, where raw water is abstracted from rivers and reservoirs.
Raw water needs to be protected to ensure that it is not polluted which could lead to additional purification treatment.
To do this water companies and the Environment Agency identify raw water sources that are ‘at risk’ of deterioration which would result in the need for additional treatment. These zones are areas where the land use is causing pollution of the raw water. Action is targeted in these zones to address pollution so that extra treatment of raw water can be avoided.
This data includes what substances are causing the drinking water protected area to be ‘at risk’. Attribution statement: © Environment Agency copyright and/or database right 2017. All rights reserved.
