Title

WFD Cycle 2 Invasive non native species over ride classification

Alternative title(s)

Abstract

This dataset is a subset of the "WFD Classification Status Cycle 2" dataset. Water bodies classified at High Ecological Status undergo an additional check for the presence of Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS). If records show presence of INNS the status class of the water body is downgraded to Good Status. The following criteria have been used to assess INNS:  Records of INNS must be recent (from within the usual 3-year data window used for biological sampling). Historic records have not been used to downgrade water body status even if are no more recent records to suggest the INNS are no longer present.  Records of INNS must be from within the water body classified as High Status, not neighbouring water bodies or nearby regions of land/water.  Species must be on the current UK TAG list of high impact species (appended) Attribution statement: © Environment Agency copyright and/or database right 2015. Lineage

The Water Framework Directive classification system is risk based and focuses on where there is likely to be a problem. It uses a principle known as "one out, all out", which means the poorest individual results drive the overall classification for a water body. It reports on over 30 quality elements, grouped into ecological status and chemical status. Ecological status includes physico-chem (e.g. nutrients, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia) , biological elements (e.g. phytoplankton, macroalgae, fish, invertebrates) , specific pollutants (e.g. metals and compounds, organic compounds) , hydromorphology (e.g. depth, width, flow, structure). Chemical status is assessed using priority substances, priority hazardous substances and other pollutants that present a significant risk to the water environment.
