Dove Time Series Plankton Data 1968 Onwards
Initiated in August 1968, with the UNESCO standard WP2 vertically hauled net. WP3 was introduced vertically in March 1969 and became a horizontal tow (~10min) in circa 1974. The UNESCO standard vertically hauled P200 was introduced in 1972. Sampling was undertaken on a monthly basis where possible. P200 and WP2 were hauled from approximately 50 m, four times and collated to cover a net distance of 200 m and a net volume of 50 m3. Flowmeters have been fitted to recorded actual volume. Analysed faunal abundance data (identified to species level where possible) exists from 1968 to 2008, with samples from 2008 to present collected and currently under analysis.

Taxonomic abundance of zooplankton and phytoplankton to species level, where possible, in the Central North Sea. The samples are collected using vertical hauled P200 and WP2 and horizontally towed WP3. The samples are fixed in 4 % formo- saline solution for a minimum of 24 hours. The samples are rinsed of formaldehyde and stored in 70 % IDA. For analysis, the samples are either analysed in full (if total organism abundance low enough to be reasonable analysis) or a subsample is taken. Many authors of the Dove Time Series (pre - 2000) have used the WP2 net and the WP3 in combination for combined per m3 calculated from either net dependant on organism or density of organism. For the WP2, a subsample of approximately 100 ml has been split using a Folsom splitter of visually suitable zooplankton density and for the FlowCAM analysis and zooplankton enumeration in the period of 1996 to 2008. The fraction for the Folsom was diluted to typically 50 ml. Ichthyoplankton was identified to species, where possible with the years of 1978 to 2008, within the WP3 samples by Malcolm Baptie. It had not been previously investigated. Phytoplankton analysed undertaken using variants of the Utermöhl technique form the P200 net.
