Areas of Archaeological Potential
The shape and form of a modern town is the product of hundreds, sometimes thousands of years. Much of its history is to be seen in its historic buildings or its street plan. Elsewhere it may survive as buried archaeological deposits. These remains are highly vulnerable to destruction by modern development. Although there has been a great deal of work at major towns and cities such as Chester and York, the minor historic centres have been less well studied. The Cheshire Historic Environment Record, in partnership with English Heritage, carried out a survey of the archaeological potential and historic development of 37 historic towns of Cheshire, Halton and Warrington. The survey was divided into three phases - data gathering, assessment and strategy. During data gathering a wide range of sources were examined, collated and entered on to the Cheshire Historic Environment Record Database. This data was assessed and used to write a component based summary of the history and archaeology of each town. This information was mapped on to a Geographic Information System, enabling the production of period based time-slice maps for each town. Finally a strategy for the protection of the historic features of each town was devised, identifying, where possible, an Area of Archaeological Potential based on the assessment. The strategy reports are intended to act as Supplementary Planning Document to the archaeological policies in the Local Development Framework. They include a defined Area of Archaeological Potential consisting of one or more Archaeological Character Zones. Copies of the Assessment and Strategy reports for each town are available on the following web site: http://www.cheshirearchaeology.org.uk/?page_id=173 The data has the following attribute structure: Attribute = Desc DesigUID = CHER unique identifier Name = Name of the Area of Archaeological Potential Assigned = Date of designation Amended = Date of last amendment to designation RCP_ArcGIS = Hyper-link to the Assessment/Strategy reports RCP_WebGIS = Hyper-link to the Assessment/Strategy reports xgEdited = Date/editor of last CHER edit xgLockedBy = Not used
