Gloucestershire County Council County Landscape Character Types
Gloucestershire County Council County Landscape Character Assessment
In 2002 the combined landscape character assessment for the whole of the administrative county of Gloucestershire identified a total of 38 landscape character types. County landscape character types are distinct types of landscape that are relatively uniform in character. They may occur in other different parts of England, but wherever they occur they share broadly similar combinations of geology, landform, drainage patterns, vegetation, and historical land use and settlement pattern. The county landscape character types therefore broadly link into the national typology for England.

Boundaries were digitised onto OS 1:50,000 digital baseline mapping (raster data) and completed in 2002. Boundaries determined by the OS baseline with GIS overlays produced from site survey, background research, physical attributes of the landscape, cultural attributes, consultation with stakeholders and incorporation of all existing and parallel studies covering the county of Gloucestershire. An ArcGIS shapefile was produced by consultants and then converted into a SDE feature class format by Gloucestershire County Council.
