Soil respiration, leaf litter decomposition and root morphotyping in the absence and presence of tree roots at two locations in the UK, October-November 2023
[This dataset is embargoed until November 30, 2025]. The data encompass measurements in soil and litter, including leaf litter decomposition, soil respiration, and root morphology analysis in the absence and presence of tree roots in the UK. Data were collected in two locations, Alice Holt and Thetford, UK, in October-November 2023, under three different treatments: 1. Root trenching and root ingrowth prevention: roots were severed from the tree in a 2x2 meter area, and a membrane preventing root ingrowth was inserted into the soil, resulting a free of living space. 2. Root trenching: roots were severed from the tree in a 2x2 meter area, but new roots were allowed to grow in that space. 3. Control: The soil remained undisturbed, with no intervention. There are three datasets: 1. Soil Respiration: Measured with an automated soil CO2 flux system (Li-8100A, Li-Cor, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA) using pre-installed opaque soil collars. Data include CO2 flux [µmol m-2s-1]. 2. Leaf Litter Decomposition: Measured by subtracting the final weight from the initial weight for six types of leaf litter: beech, oak, and pine collected from both Thetford and Alice Holt forests. The values are presented as a percentage of mass loss. 3. Root Morphotyping: Evaluates the percentage of ectomycorrhizal, non-mycorrhizal, and dry root tips found in a 100 cm³ soil volume. The values are presented as percentages, with the total number of root tips representing 100%.
