Title

Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Farnes East recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ)

Abstract

A broadscale habitat feature class was created to illustrate predicted extent of broadscale habitats present at Farnes East rMCZ. These broadscale habitats include 'Moderate energy circalittoral rock', 'Subtidal coarse sediment', 'Subtidal sand', 'Subtidal mud' and 'Subtidal mixed sediments' as determined from particle size analysis of sediment samples and descriptive analysis of still images from underwater camera data. The assigned classes at each ground-truth stationwere used to inform the semi-automated process of map production using object-based image analysis (OBIA)in combination with regression kriging. Groundtruthing data collected during 2012 on the RV Cefas Endeavour (surveID CEND0412). Additional information source: Eggleton, J. et al 2015. Lineage

Classification system details: EUNIS habitats and a separate FOCI layer. Survey technique details: 0.1m2 mini Hamon grab; Camera sledge; multibeam data colected by EGS under contract in 2012. This data set was produced using data layers collected at Farnes East rMCZ. The northeast part of the Farnes East rMCZ overlapped with an area of existing Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) bathymetry and backscatter data acquired by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) under the Civil Hydrographic Programme (CHP). Full coverage MBES bathymetry and backscatter data were acquired for most of the remainder of the site by EGS (International) Ltd. during February/March 2012, using a Reson 7125 system on the MV Neptune. Ground truth surveys at the Farnes East rMCZ were carried out onboard RV Cefas Endeavour during March 2012 (cruise CEND 04/12) and March 2014 (cruise CEND0514) using a mini Hamon grab and underwater video deployed from towed camera sledge and drop frame systems. The acoustic and ground thruthing data. i.e. PSA and still image data were used to create the broadscale habitat map. Broadscale habitat class assignments from the particle size data were used in conjunction with the interpreted still images to inform the semi-automated process of map production using a hybrid approach consisting of regression kriging and object-based image analysis. In order to predict sediment type across the study area, regression-kriging was used . This consists of (i) a regression model aiming to predict a target variable (sediment composition in this case) based on exhaustively sampled auxiliary variables (in this case the acoustic data), and (ii) a geostatistical interpolation of the target variables exploiting spatial autocorrelation known as kriging. For mapping circalittoral rock, object-based image analysis was implemented in the software package eCognition v9.0.2. The input layers used were the MBES backscatter strength, MBES bathymetry and several derivatives of these. The output broadscale habitat data layers include .shp and .lyr arc files.
