Archaeological Characterisation
HUC
The Chester Urban Characterisation is part of a national programme developed and funded by English Heritage and encompasses the civil parishes of Chester Non parish, Chester Castle and Great Boughton. The Urban Character Zones were created following the analysis of the Archaeological Period Layers and are most likely to be adopted as supplementary local planning guidance. Each zone is provided with a summary document (in Microsoft Word/Adobe PDF) format that will highlight the key characteristics of that zone. These summary statements are aimed at planners and developers and will in consequence focus on the archaeological potential within a given area and the potential impact of development. This will enable planners and developers to consider the impact of visual design, construction techniques and expected archaeological potential. Human activity and social organisation have an impact on the landscape which is often visible today. Historic Landscape Characterisation involves the examination of the modern landscape, in order to infer the historic processes that have formed that landscape as it is seen today. The modern landscape, field shape, settlement patterns etc, is systematically assessed and compared to 19th century Ordnance Survey maps to assess change and time depth. The collated data is held in a database, which can be analysed to produce broad or detailed historic landscape classifications, answer specific questions or map change and whose results can be displayed through a Geographic Information System to produce map based interpretative models. http://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/visiting/heritage/archaeology/archaeology_planning_advisory Chester UAD character Zones Polygon Data Data is provided as an ArcView Shape-file (.shp).with the following attributes: Attribute - Description HLCUID - HLC Unique Identifier BroadTypeDec - name of dataset BroadTypeCode - code for dataset HLCTypeDesc - name of Broad character grouping HLCTypeCode - code for broad character group Name - Name of character zone Zone_ArcGIS - ArcGIS link for intranet mapping website for the Zone pdf Zone_WebGIS - weblink for public facing interactive mapping website for the Zone pdf SPD - Name of the Urban Archaeological Plan UAP_ArcGIS - ArcGIS link for intranet mapping website for the Urban Archaeological Plan pdf UAP_WebGIS - weblink for public facing interactive mapping website for the Urban Archaeological Plan pdf xgEdited - Date/Editor of Last CHER Edit Shape_Length - Perimeter of the polygon in Meters Shape_Area - Area of polygon in Square Meters
