Rochdale Borough Council adopted its Unitary Development Plan (UDP) in June 2006 and covers the 15 year period 2001 to 2016. Currently the future use and development of land and buildings in Rochdale borough is guided by the UDP. It is a statutory land-use plan covering the whole borough. It sets out a framework of policies to control the location and quality of new development; encourage and stimulate development where appropriate; protect and improve the environment and safeguard the borough’s most important natural and built assets. It’s the main document against which all planning applications are judged. It also has an important role in integrating land use and transport planning, co-ordinating public and private investment, and providing a policy framework to support bids for funding. The UDP is in two main parts. Proposals maps which show where the policies apply and what the land is allocated for. A written statement of the policies and an explanation of why they are needed. In addition, waste policies expired on 1 April 2012 upon adoption of the Greater Manchester joint Waste Development Plan Document (DPD) and mineral policies expired on 26 April 2013 upon adoption of the Greater Manchester joint Minerals DPD. The Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan documents which will eventually replace the UDP. Datasets have not been altered since the UDP was adopted in June 2006. The datasets will be reviewed through the ongoing Local Plan process.
