Scottish School Roll and Locations
Information about Scottish schools are updated by the Scottish Government annually for the purposes of monitoring overall performance, equality and individual policies. This dataset provides the current geocoded location, contact address, roll numbers, teacher numbers, denomination, and proportion of pupils from minority and ethnic groups for each primary, secondary and special school in Scotland. Updates are normally published in the spring, and reflective of the previous September.

This dataset represents the geo-locations for Scottish schools recorded in the following publication: http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/Browse/School-Education/Datasets/contactdetails. The dataset is maintained by adding and removing schools as necessary and has been improved using Ordnance Survey addressing information and UPRNs added to the dataset attribution. In some instances the contact information provided for the school is a decant location (e.g. while a new school is being built on the old site). In most of these cases, the geocoded location for the school has been left where the school is actually located rather than the decant location. This is due to the fact that by the time the school roll spreadsheet has been published, the school often already been moved back to the actual location, or is very soon to do so. The dataset includes the SEED code for each school, which is a 7-digit number assigned by the Scottish Government for each school. A field called SchUID has also been added which adds a ‘P’, ‘S’ or ‘SP’ suffix to each SEED code to indicate primary, secondary or special schools respectively. This is because a primary and secondary school that operate at the same campus will both be assigned the same SEED code. The SchUID code should be used as the unique field for the dataset. Note that a point has been created for each SchUID, so a single SEED code or 'campus' may have multiple points. As a result this dataset has more instances than the school contact list spreadsheet. Schools have also been assigned a deprivation ranking based on the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) 2016. The rank number indicates the rank of the data zone which the school is located in. The vigintile of the data zone is provided as well as whether it falls within the 15 percent most deprived data zones or the 16 to 25 percent most deprived (indicated by ‘Y’ or ‘N’). The 15 percent most deprived data zones equate to vigintiles 1, 2 and 3, whereas the 16 to 25 percent most deprived equate to vigintiles 4 and 5. Schools have also been assigned an urban rural code based on the 6 and 8 fold version of the Scottish Government's Urban Rural Classification. Note that the urban rural assignments are given for the geocoded location and also for the data zone in which the school falls. Assignments may be different for the address/data zone in about 2.5% of cases. Discretion is required when considering which assignment should be used for a given project.
