Archaeological Event Record

Abstract

Archaeological and historic building interventions, investigations and other similar activities (e.g. excavations, field surveys, photographic recording, geophysics etc.) in Cornwall and Scilly are all recorded by the by the HER team in the Historic Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record (HBSMR). These projects are termed 'Events' since they occur at a particular time, in a particular place with a specific aim. Usually 'Events' are the result of archaeological and historic building conditions applied during the planning process or are the findings of independent academic research. However they may also simply record the fact that someone somewhere discovered a new site or artefact purely by chance. Event records are used to update the HBSMR where they identify new and previously unknown sites or where they provide more detailed or new information which can be used to update existing records. They are also a very useful way to disseminate the results of a project to wider audiences. Many contain new and valuable information which is critical for improving our understanding of Cornwall's past. They supplement the standard site, monument and building specific records that form the main body of the HBSMR. The HER participates in a national project to collate the results of such work. This initiative, called Online AccesS to the Index of archaeological investigationS (OASIS), aims to provide an online index to the mass of archaeological 'grey literature' (ie. unpublished reports) that has been produced as a result of, largely, developer funded fieldwork and projects undertaken by reserachers and volunteers. Contributing to the OASIS project enables information about Cornwall and Scilly to be catalogued onto the national Archaeological Data Service (ADS) website where reports are made available directly through the Unpublished Fieldwork Reports Library, Here it is possible to search and retrieve reports based on a variety of different search criteria. Event report numbers are generally prefixed with either the year followed by the HES report number (e.g. 1999R001) or by ER signifying an external report, or by CA indicating that the event is recorded in a volume of 'Cornish Archaeology', the journal of the Cornwall Archaeological Society. Most HES reports are available to download via intranet and Access to Monuments mapping. External reports and CA journals are available to view in the office of Cornwall Council's HER team. Accuracy of Content: The level of detail and the accuracy of the information held on each site reflects the nature or content of the sources used to compile the record. Users of this data should consult the HER to clarify the level of reliability and/or precision that should be afforded to information derived from the HBSMR. The Site and its Content is provided for your general information only; we do not undertake that Content will always be accurate and complete. Therefore, if you propose to do, or refrain from doing, something in reliance upon Content you find on the Site, you must check the accuracy of the relevant Content by some other means.

Lineage

The following types of investigations inlcuded in the Events record: Aerial Photo Transcription: Identification and transcription of archaeological or historical features from aerial photographs onto paper, film or digital media Archive Assessment MAP2: assessment of results of fieldwork as precursor to production of a updated project design for analysis and publication. Area Survey - Measured: Systematic examination and metrically accurate recording of the archaeological resource in the field Area Survey - Sketch: Systematic examination and recording of estimated locations/dimensions of the archaeological resource in the field Assessment: Largely desk-based exercise to establish the archaeological content and potential of a given area. May include a field visit. Non-Intrusive. Often followed by Evaluation Building Record: Observation and recording of building or built structure, not involving accurate measurement, to clarify date, phasing etc. Building Survey: Systematic measurement and record of a building or built structure, in plan and/or elevation, relationship of its component parts etc. RadioCarbon Dating: Radiometric assessment (by whatever means) of calendrical age of organic specimen through measurent of relative proportions of carbon isotopes present. Casual Observation: Unplanned observation of sites, features or artefacts of interest, for example encountered during other activities. Consultancy: Provision of advice and guidance Environmental Sampling: Removal of samples to gather information about past environments, includes coring, boring and other types of soil sampling and analysis Evaluation: A targetted field investigation to test evidence and/or establish extent, precise location, depth, significance or potential of given area. May be Intrusive Excavation: Removal and recording of archaeological stratigraphy. Use a specific term where known (ie Major/Minor Excavation, Evaluation) Experimental and reconstructive techniques: Scientific and practical experimentation in construction, cooking, farming and other techniques linked to research or educational outreach Field Observation: Unstructured (but planned) observation and recording of sites, features or artefacts of interest. Use for 'Record of Exposure' Fieldwalking - Systematic: Systematic collection of artefacts from a surface as an aid to location of areas of past activity Fieldwalking - Unsystematic: Unsystematic collection of artefacts from a surface as an aid to location of areas of past activity Geophysical Survey Location on concealed features by Bosing, Dowsing, GPR, Magnetometry, Resistivity, Magnetic Susceptibility, Sonar, Geotechnical Investigation: Use of ground based instruments that measure and display physical characteristics of the soil, subsoil or local geology. HER Enhancement: Entering new information or updating existing in the SMR and/or its associated databases and archive systems Historic Landscape Characterisation: Assessment of the historic landscape character of an area Historic Seascape Characterisation: Assessment of the historic seascape character of an area Major Excavation: Removal of archaeological stratigraphy over a large area to reveal and record buried horizons, establish relationships, recover artefacts and other evidence for past activity. Management Recommendations: Compilation of recommendations for management and/or conservation of archaeological resource - usually follows archaeological assessment or survey Management Works: Implemenatation of management/conservation works - usually to an agreed management plan or recommendations Metal Detector Survey: Systematic measurement of distribution of concealed metal artefacts by means of their electromagnetic properties. Metal Detector Use: Unsystematic use of equipment to detect concealed metal artefacts, including their removal from the ground Minor Excavation: Removal and recording of topsoil and archaeological stratigraphy over a small percentage of a monument, site or area of interest. Photographic Survey (Aerial): Survey using photographic or other recording equipment mounted on or used from an aircraft or other airborne vehicle, irrespective of film type (inc digital). Photographic Survey: Ground) Recording of monument features or character using still or motion picture photography from the ground or other fixed vantage point, irrespective of film type (inc digital) Pre-Feasibility Report: Initial assessment of archaeological resource and implications of outline development or management proposal Presentation: All forms of Outreach inluding preparation of booklets, pamphlets, information boards, exhibitions, walks and talks Project Design: Preparation of Project Design or Costed Specification; also inludes lower level project descriptors such as Project Outline, Project Brief, etc Scientific Dating: Analytical techniques inlcuding radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology, optical luminescence etc. Site Survey: Use only when details of the nature and scope of the survey are unknown - Site/Area, Measured/Sketch Site Survey - Measured: Survey involving the systematic recording of dimensions of a site or monument, such that detailed drawings and reconstructions can be made Site Survey - Sketch: Survey involving recording and plotting estimated dimensions/locations and relationships of features on site Walkover Survey: Systematic field inspection of site or area to check exisiting knowledge and to prospect for unrecorded sites Watching Brief: Monitoring (or supervision) by an archaeologist of ground disturbance undertaken for largely non-archaeological purposes
