National Marine Monitoring Programme Cruises - RV Cirolana 05/1997 Station Data

Abstract

A series of cruises were carried out in the North Sea, English Channel and Irish Sea between 1992 and 1997 by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science to conduct monitoring studies at stations established under the UK National Monitoring Programme (NMP). Physical measurements were taken as well as the collection of samples for chemical and biological effects studies. This data consists of the station locations sampled in 1997, ancillary data recorded (e.g. salinity, temperature), and some analysis data of sediment and water bottle samples.

Sediment cores of 45cm in depth were taken using a Reineck box corer for PCB and PAH profiling. A Day grab was also used to collect further sediment samples. Water samples were collected using a bespoke subsurface sampler made of glass and Teflon designed within Cefas (a report is available which gives details). Water samples for nutrient analysis came from a continuous pumping system aboard RV Cirolana. These were analysed using a salinometer back in the lab. Values measured aboard came from a less accurate version (CTD unit). Analytical methods used depended on the determinands.
