LANDMAP is a unique national information system, devised by the former Countryside Council for Wales, allowing information about landscape in Wales to be collected and organised into a nationally consistent dataset. The LANDMAP database includes both objective and subjective information and is designed to enable landscape quality to be taken into account in decision making. Geographic dataset showing visual and sensory landscape classification for Wales in the form of polygons (Aspect Areas) with large amounts of associated textual information, including General, Description, Evaluation, Recommendations, Tolerance to Change, Area Boundary, Evaluation and Assessment. This dataset maps the landscape as perceived through our senses based on the physical attributes of landform and land cover. The perceived characteristics of the landscape are primarily determined visually, but the senses of hearing, smell and touch are also considered.

The Visual and Sensory dataset is one of five evaluated aspects which make up the LANDMAP information system. The process of gathering, organising and evaluating data is similar for each and involves: 1) Classifying and mapping distinct Aspect Areas 2) Completing a detailed data capture form for each Aspect Area identified 3) Preparation of an accompanying Technical Report 4) Submission for Quality Assurance assessment A LANDMAP Quality Assurance Procedure is in place to ensure that LANDMAP Information meets an agreed standard of good practice and that data is accurate and consistent across Wales.
