MRNE01340000004A
Survey name: 2002 English Nature (EN) Tweed Estuary, littoral sediment survey This is a collation of surveys to gather data and evidence from a variety of marine environments. The survey purposes vary and include recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ) Phase I or II verification surveys, condition assessments, surveys of features of Natura 2000 sites (Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area), Intertidal surveys, Benthic grab surveys and others. All surveys are carried out to specified standards and follow established methodologies. Attribution statement: © Natural England copyright. In order to support the cSAC Scheme of Management there is a need to obtain standardised infaunalin the intertidal mud/sand habitats of the Tweed and to produce baseline maps of thesediment types, and their associated communities (referred to as biotopesto act as a baselinefuture management and monitoring of the cSAC.aims of the present study were to establish the extent and distribution of the intertidal softbiotopes within the Tweed Estuary according to the MNCR Biotope Classification (Connoret al. 1997)reference was made to the presence and extent of Enteromorpha and other ephemeral algalwith an assessment being made on any alterations to the underlying communities caused by theof such species.objectives of this particular survey as defined by English Nature were therefore as follows: To carry out a Phase 1 survey of the intertidal zone of the mud and mud/sand habitats of the To map the biological and physical diversity of the habitats and their location, extent andby producing biotope distribution maps (in particular, noting the location and extentEnteromorpha communities); To provide the geographical information upon which other more detailed Phase 2 surveys can bewhich could be used to obtain information on the frequency and abundance of speciesthe physical characteristics of the sediment.
