Surveys undertaken ob RV Corystes, codes CORY 10/2001, CORY 09/2002 and CORY 8x/2003. Porosity is the fraction of void space in a material. Here the material is sediment and the voids between the sediment grains are filled with seawater. Porosity (symbol Φ, phi) is expressed as the volume of the void divided by the volume of the whole sample, so is given as a fraction between 0 and 1. Intact sediment cores were sliced in 1 cm horizons to a depth of 20 cm. Porosity was calculated using the dry weight and wet weight of known volumes of sediment, assuming a sediment particle density of 2.7 g cm <sup>...</sup> and a seawater density of 1.035 g cm <sup>...</sup> . Chlorophyll concentration was determined by fluorometry, following a standard operating procedure.
