Abstract

A trawl survey of bass in the Solent carried out by Cefas in September 2015 as part of a time series that commenced in the late 1970s. The purpose of the survey is to develop a time-series of pre-recruit indices for bass in and near the nursery grounds within the Solent area.

Lineage

All 35 of the planned stations were completed. A detailed description of the history, survey gear and methods used are described in a Cefas laboratory report “Surveying fish populations in the Solent and adjacent harbours using the CEFAS bass trawl.” Bass *(Dicentrarchus labrax)* were caught at 31 stations, and fish at ages 2 – 4, which are included in the abundance index, were taken at 30 stations. A total of 893 bass were caught, 761 within the harbours and 219 outside. Age compositions of the survey catches of bass were obtained from the numbers at length together with ages determined from 211 bass scale samples taken and read during the survey. A full list of other fish species caught on this survey is provided below.
