Spatial dataset showing the boundary of historic parks and gardens within the Leeds Metropolitan District. The extract has been taken from English Heritage Parks and Gardens Register. The Parks and Gardens Register provides an overview of over 1500 designated parks and gardens that make a contribution to the richness of the English landscape and cross references listed buildings associated with them. The Register serves increase awareness of these sites, and to ensure that the features and qualities which make these landscapes of national importance can be safeguarded. They are currently protected under amendments to the Ancient Monuments Act 1953 and the National Heritage Act of 1983. Each site is graded into three bands to give added guidance on their significance; grade I have international importance; grade II* are considered to be of exceptional historic interest and grade II are of national importance. Inclusion of a historic park or garden on the Register in itself does not bring additional statutory controls, but the Register is recognised as a 'material consideration' in the planning process. Local authorities are also required by central government to make provision for the protection of historic parks and gardens in their policies and their allocation of resources. Please note that registered sites are not open to the public unless separately advertised by the owner as being so. The spatial depiction is purely an indication of spatial extent and should always be used in conjunction with the textual description. For legal perspective please consult original paper maps.
