2011-Present Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Eastern IFCA) Horseshoe Point cockle surveys
Since January 2011, Eastern IFCA have carrried out foot surveys at Horseshoe Point, Lincolnshire for the purpose of a cockle (Cerastoderma edule) stock assessment and monitoring, and to assess the possibility of opening the fishery if deemed viable. The surveys have been carried out bi-annually where possible, otherwise surveys have been conducted annually.

Surveys are carried out along predetermined grid of sample stations at each of the three beds at Horseshoe Point (Horseshoe Point, Grainthorpe West, and Grainthorpe East). The Horseshoe Point bed consists of 36 sampling stations, while Grainthorpe West and East beds each consist of 15 stations. The surveys are carried out at low water spring tide. Handheld GPS units are used to locate sampling stations, and at each station, a 0.1m squared quadrat is thrown (backwards, to ensure randomness) and dug out. The contents are then sieved over a 0.5mm sieve such that all cockles can be retained for later processing. Retained cockles are divided into year classes, measured to the nearest mm and weighed to the nearest 0.1g, and separated into groups of less than 14mm, 14-15mm, and greater than 16mm widths. MapInfo software is then used to create density charts of the size groups.
