Title

Legacy BGS geothermal models: temperature at the base Sherwood Sandstone Group in the Permo-Triassic Cheshire, Worcester, Wessex and East Yorkshire-Lincolnshire basins (hot sedimentary aquifer resources)

Abstract

This raster dataset represents the calculated temperature distribution (°C) at the base of the Sherwood Sandstone Group (SSG) in the main Permo-Triassic Cheshire, Wessex and Worcester basins and the intra-SSG temperature in the East Yorkshire-Lincolnshire Basin, considered for their hot sedimentary aquifer geothermal resource potential. The extent of the temperature maps corresponds to the extent of the modelled base SSG in each basin. The maps are provided in raster format at a 100 m resolution and are based on temperature data from the latest revision of the UK Geothermal Catalogue (1987) compiled during the 1977-1991 Geothermal Energy Programme. For all basins taken together, the temperature ranges between 5.3°C to 103.7°C, with the highest temperatures found at depth in the Wessex Basin. The dataset is used as a basis for the determination of the heat resource potential of the Triassic hot sedimentary aquifers in the UK (heat-in-place and heat recoverable).

Lineage

These temperature maps were compiled by BGS using data created and published by Rollin, K. E., G. A. Kirby, and W. J. Rowley. Atlas of geothermal resources in Europe: UK revision. British Geological Survey, Regional Geophysics Group, 1995. Those were based on data compiled in the latest version of the UK Geothermal Catalogue, UKGC (1987) during the 1977-1991 Geothermal Energy Programme, delivered by BGS and funded by UK Department of Energy (and both its antecedents and successors), and the European Commission. Most of the temperature measurements consist of equilibrium temperatures and bottom hole temperatures (BHTs) corrected for the time since circulation using the Horner (HOR) method (Horner, 1951). For the Eastern England Basin, the temperature field for the Sherwood Sandstone Group was directly derived from available temperature data from about 250 wells compiled in the UKGC 1987. The temperature maps were interpolated and gridded using the ISM (Interactive Surface Modeling) package. For all the other basins, a model of the subsurface temperature was derived by convolution of the observed heat flow field with the geological/structural model of the basin and the thermal conductivity structure, using the UKGC thermal conductivity database, and assuming one-dimensional steady-state conductive heat transfer with heat production. The maps for each basin were merged into a single layer as part of the 2025 UK Geothermal Platform project.
