Air Quality Management Area
We have a statutory duty to manage local air quality in Sheffield under the Environment Act 1995. We have an Air Quality Action Plan for how we will tackle problems with air quality in Sheffield. The action plan relates to our Air Quality Management Area (AQMA), which is the urban area of Sheffield. This is for both Nitrogen Dioxide and Particulates (fine dust - PM10). It replaces the two previous AQMAs declared around the M1 motorway in Tinsley and the city centre. An action plan and its AQMA are required if standards set in the national Air Quality Strategy aren't met.
