2009 - 2011 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Sampling Positions in the Greater North Sea from 2009 to 2011 for Defra project ME5301 fulfilled by Cefas
E5301 Sampling Positions
Provides both the Target and Actual positions of locations in the Greater North Sea where the seabed was sampled by Cefas under the Defra funded Project ME5301. Vessel = Cefas Endeavour; Cruises = CEND15/09, CEND10/11 and CEND11/11.

Sampling included box coring (for sediment geochemistry, granulometry and infauna), Sediment Profile Imagery (SPI), water column sampling (CTD rosettes), Hamon grab sampling (infauna & granulometry) and 2-metre beam trawls. This positional dataset provides a Quality Assured resource and was compiled at the end of the project for archival purposes. #Target loctions are used to provide the vessel with a position that is to be occupied for sampling. Typically, multiple replicate samples with a variety of sampling gears were acquired at each targeted location and the actual sampling positions were recorded by GPS Fix when the sampling gear hit the seabed. Hence there is a one-to-many relationship between TargetPositions and ActualPosition. Records include data from Defra funded project ME5301 entitled "Mapping the structure, function and sensitivity of seabed sediment habitats to support assessment of the sea-floor status and the broadscale monitoring and management of the benthic environment" which sampled locations in the North Sea and western English Channel. Further details of the project can be found at: `http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&Completed=2&ProjectID=16812`_ Alias Station Codes exist for CEND 1509 because the survey was designed in real-time. An initial 'prospecting' survey comprised an acoustic survey line run along the Torbay (TB) transect complemented by eight deployments of the Sediment Profile Imager (SPI camera). These SPI locations were labelled TORSPI01 - TORSPI08 and resulted in the selection of the first Main sampling station TBM1 at the NW end of the transect. Further SPI sampling was carried out along the transect (SPI01 to SPI20) to identify a second Main sampling site TBM2, Bulk sampling sites (TBBU01 to TBBU11) and a transition area between mud and sand (TBBT1 to TBBT6). These were later sampled by Box corer (NIOZ design) for sediment geochemistry. Similar prospecting and sampling was carried out at two locations known as Start Point West (SPW) and Start Point East (SPE), including SPI21 to SPI34. The western area proved unsuitable for Box coring but was sampled by SPI and Hamon Grab (for infauna). One Main station (SPM1) and four bulk stations (SPE 1, 3, 4, 6) were sampled by Box corer for sediment geochemistry. .. _`http://randd.defra.gov.uk/default.aspx?menu=menu&module=more&location=none&completed=2&projectid=16812`: http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&Completed=2&ProjectID=16812
