Lineage

Potentially toxic phytoplankton identified to genera or species level. Enumeration is by the Utermohl method using high-power, inverted microscopes and well trained personnel. Samples are collected by Local Authority officers or designated contractors using sampling protocols and training provided by Cefas. All laboratory procedures are conducted in compliance with the UKNRL SOP for the identification and enumeration of marine phytoplankton. Cefas have also developed UKAS 17025 accredited and detailed SOPs for the delivery of a comprehensive service from sample receipt to timely reporting of analytical results to the customer on a daily basis. The plankton laboratory at Cefas Lowestoft has been UKAS accredited for phytoplankton analysis since 2007.
