Title

2016 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Southannan Sands SSSI intertidal survey

Abstract

The purpose of this intertidal survey work, undertaken by SNH, was to monitor the sandflats feature of the Southannan Sands SSSI. This survey took place over three days in July 2016. The purpose of this monitoring survey was to improve knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of species and habitats - sandflats are a protected feature of this site and component habitats include intertidal seagrass beds and blue mussel beds (both of which are PMFs). Intertidal core samples were collected on three shores, one transect was surveyed on each shore.

Lineage

Intertidal surveys were undertaken at Southannan Sands SSSI by SNH from 25th-27th July 2016. Handheld cores, dig-overs, and quadrats were used to collect samples along a series of transects. A total of 16 zones (stations) were identified along three shore transects; one at Hunterston Sands, one at Southannan Sands, and one at Fairlie Sands. Eight cores of 10.3 cm diameter to a depth of approximately 15 cm were pooled from each biological zone on the three shores. A total of 14 infaunal core replicates were collected out of the 16 zones identified (at two of the transects the upper shore substrates were too course to core sample, therefore were not taken). All core smaples were sieved on a 0.5mm sieve, and this sieve residue was retained and fixed using buffered formalin. Additional data was also collected at each zone where possible: (1) 15 sediment samples for PSA; (2) 5 quadrats from each of the 16 shore zones; and (3) dig-over data from one of each of the 14 zones where sediments permitted. This information from quadrats and dig-overs was used to assist in biotope determinations for each survey zone. The position of each sample transect and sample station were recorded. Laboratory processing methodologies followed NMBAQC guidelines.
