1983 - 1983 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) 1983 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series
A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out in 1983. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded. A summary table is included for cruises 02/83 and 03/83 containing catch data for all other species.

Three cruises were carried out in 1983: - **Silver Star 01/83 (20th March - 09th April)** The vessel travelled to Conwy on the 20th March. During the period 21st-25th March only one day's work was possible due to strong Northerly winds. A temporary lull in this bad weather enabled work to continue for a three day period from 26th-28th March, after which work was again curtailed. On 30th March with no prospect of improvement in the weather it was decided to return to Lowestoft until the next tidal cycle. Staff then returned to Conwy on 5th April and work recommenced on the morning of the 6th, after 3 days of uninterrupted work, the survey was successfully completed. - **Silver Star 02/83 (04th July - 09th July)** The entire survey was carried out in calm weather and all 24 trawl stations were completed in 6 days. - **Silver Star 03/83 (15th October - 25th October)** Despite arriving at Conwy on 14th October, work was delayed until the 20th due to strong to gale force winds. After which, work proceeded without further interference for the following 6 days and was completed on the 25th October. Only one station in the Liverpool Bay sector was abandoned owing to a rapid deterioration in the weather conditions during the last day.
