A robust and affordable taxi fare calculator used by a good number of taxi cab companies in the UK is offered by www.Driving-Distances.com - it is flexible and tailorable and allows taxi companies to log in and change their pricing structure and add new types of vehicles (i.e. with different tarriffs) if they wish. Worth a look if you need this sort of functionality!
You can already do this. Just open Google Earth, measure the distance (ask a friend if you don't know how), and get your calculator out of your pocket. You probably have a calculator "app" on your mobile phone.
Fixing the price between two points would be good. If some drivers think you are local, they will be 'reasonable' about the route. However, should they suspect that you are from out-of-town, the route may well be much longer.
A 'calculator' similar to satnav might work, perhaps with set routes which the
passenger can ask the driver to follow.
Such routes having a fixed (or pre-
agreed) price would negate any
argument about the price.
The site
The site http://yourtaximeter.com does what you're after. It uses prices set by the local district council and seems to be incredibly accurate.
