Publication of information on overdue amounts due to HM Revenue from businesses

When businesses fail, I find that they have failed owing HM Revenue large sums of money (recently HS Works Ltd owed £9,100,000) which must have built up over a considerable period of time. Free information should be available to show which businesses are overdue to HM revenue, by how much and how long. As a business owner I would like to know this as this is the first indicator of their ability to pay my debt. I could choose whether to extend credit to them with much more knowledge than currently. As a business owner regularly paying my bills to HMRC on time, I have a right to this information which is held to avoid me losing money when these businesses fail and threatening the jobs of staff that work for me.

Surely sometimes the main culprits are the big utilities companies that withhold the due monies and having purposely complicated compliance procedures to withhold monies further to these smaller utility contractors which make them reach the point where they can no longer continue. They get as much work out of them with promise of money and let them fold when it gets to breaking point. Unfortunately it's the people at the bottom that suffer. I have worked in this industry for 21years close to these utility contractors, a friend of my started with h s works last year, he had been a director of two previous contractors in this industry they both went the same way as h s works i meet him earlier this year at the new yard their were £300000 of plant in the yard and said to him how is this posible he said the plan these thing at least 6 month in advance transfering asets across, having known his history i said whats his name then, he said what do you mean i said theirs.... ? and....? and.... ? he laughed and said its ........? the same name.my point is these people no excactly what their doing and one of the reasons the world is in financial meltdown.but guess what its 14 11 2011 and he is part of a company thats just won a major contract for s e gas . go figure. p s excuse my grammer.

A matter of principle
As a matter of principle, I would be wary of doing business with any company that has owed back taxes for a long period of time. Why should I help people who have failed to make adequate provisions for doing their duty to society? OK, they might need money/deals to STOP their business going bankrupt... They might WANT to pay their taxes in a few cases... But most of these guys are complete CROOKS.
I hear too often of companies going bankrupt, where the staff just turn up to work one morning (the day before their monthly pay day) and find the premises all locked up. As though the managers and accountants somehow didn't know until the last minute what was happening.
Totally agree with the sentiment of this post - as a legitimate business, I feel I have a right to this information.

all hs works staff were sent p45's in dec and then told they work for hs water funny thing is they get paid by hs gas
