Take the farmers market to the web - have a searchable map of local food producers. Often small producers or farm shops don't have websites so finding out about them can be difficult. For example try finding a fish shop outside of a city these days....

Is this really a government service?
Hi,
Private centre enterprises and cooperatives are not really the duty of the government to advertise. The companies themselves, if they wish to benefit from this, should be doing this rather than spending by central or local government and the associated costs of doing so (which would run to the tens of thousands at least due to staffing needed to contact them all).
I prefer less tax and for the private sector to act for itself.

Needs thinking thru
Some years ago I produced a printed directory of local food suppliers in Northants, Rutland & the Soke of Peterborough. One question I was asked is what is "local food"? Should the whole product have been produced localy, or what about someone who adds value to a foodstuff from elsewhere?

Robert, yes you're right needs a bit more thought but maybe the ideas you've raised could be seperate layers of information? eg my example of a fish shop - potentially they could sell fish from all over the world but at least I know that they are in my area. I was thinking more of retailers rather than producers but I find that independant retailers tend to sell local products as it's generally more practical. And often the producer is the retailer eg farm shops.

Great idea. This is just what I need. If I'm going out somewhere it would be useful to know what's available in the places I visit. It's usually fairly easy to find out what's on your doorstep but even 5 miles away is foreign territory sometimes.
