Provide statistics on population, land area, coastline length etc

Coastline-Length?
This is a sound suggestion: lots of foundational work required, but then: low maintenance and long-lasting value to all sorts of disciplines. And an excellent basis for trend-analyses.
But 'coastline'? How intriguing. Why? And, as important, what else?
Mundanely I was thinking of 'miles of paved roads', socio-economic breakdown of populace and the like, but coastline breaks new ground and challenges imagination.

Coastline Length
Just stumbled across this. There is a correlation between length of coastline in your region (assuming you have a coastline) and your water company. Water companies have a number of responsibilities with respect to water quality, discharge from waste water outfall pipes etc.
