Determine how much money you donate to charity (via DFID) depending on how much tax you pay

There should be an app which would allow citizens to enter their salary (and any other taxable income) into a calculator which would then work out, pro-rata, how much they indirectly contribute to International Aid via DFID. It would be even more useful if this figure could then drill-down into DFID country operations, as a proportion of DFID spend; for instance, someone earning £30,000 may give £100 in tax to DFID each year (a total guess), of which 58p might go to India (again, a total guess).
This idea could then be expanded to show how much they indirectly spend on the armed forces, NHS, pensions etc.

Great idea.  Political parties could then produce an individual manifesto for everyone and we could decide which package of measures is our favourite and vote accordingly.  Could the Govt stand to hand over that much power to the electorate????

No chance

There's no way any government would give up this amount of power.  It's a nice notion, though.  I have a more radical proposal; let each citizen decide, for a premium, how his or her tax contribution will be distributed among the departments.  The problem with this scenario is that people don't know enough about how government works to make rational decisions- inevitably, some departments would end up critically underfunded.
