3D university campus

University campuses will be accessible via web browser and mobile device. Users will be able to freely navigate through a 3D replica of the real campus environment and trigger interactive interfaces that provide information (text, links, photos and video) in real time. The interfaces can be updated 24/7 by university officials. E-commerce can be conducted via the interfaces and the campus environment can be expanded to include surrounding biz and entertainment sectors.

I agree with Matthew - not a Government project - but very interesting nonetheless. Many Universities are looking into this, although maybe not in 3d. At Bristol University we are working on a Mobile Web application that provides students with time and location sensitive data.

The project is funded by Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) under their Business and Community Engagement Programme.

A job for the students, not the government...
This is an excellent project for the students on-site - but not something the Government should be getting involved with, in my opinion. Note also the security aspects of this - you wouldn't want to publish a full three-dimensional model of the inside of your house on the internet would you? With pictures of all the goods that burglars might like to steal?

Have a look at the 3D campus we set-up for Lancaster University.

Constructed from laser scanning and ground based photogrametry. The campus model has a content management system linked to modeled objects.
It requires a plug-in so not perfect but its a start. When we have a standard 3D format hopefully this will improve.
