Data linking has been around for years!

This borrows a term that has been around for years in a wider context.  For example, linking together data from two quite different official business surveys.  That requires the use of a common reference number for the business.  I appreciate that enabling third parties to link sources in the way described is an important aim but I get worried whenever anything gives the impression that something must be done in a particular way, or it doesn't exist/count.  Low tech data linking is fine in some contexts and should not be overlooked.

Linked data term definition

I think it would be incorrect to say that the term Linked Data describes THE best practice for ... tells us that ... Wikipedia defines Linked Data as "a term used to describe A recommended best practice for exposing, sharing, and connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge on the Semantic Web using URIs and RDF."  and now Wikipedia ( tells us that it is just "...a method of publishing structured data.."    Linked data the story so far ( tells us...  The term Linked Data refers to a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web.
