Commercial use of data
Data released under the Open Government Licence can be re-used for commercial purposes. We'd like to hear from you about interesting commercial uses of data published to the data.gov.uk registry, what would make it easier to use the data commercially, or any ideas about how the data found on the site could be put to innovative commercial use - let us know your thoughts!

I think that's a great idea. If some commercial or business data could be put up on the businesslink website it might help more people and be seen by more people.
That is very fair comment. There are plenty of business statistics available via the National Statistics website but if there are links to that from Business Link they are not obvious to me.
The downside is that much of what is available is sometimes insufficiently detailed for an individual business's requirement, in terms of industry/product, geographical coverage or both. That comes down in part to the need to keep sample sizes down. I suspect that government cutbacks will make that worse. It may be that there is little alternative at present, but it is an example of how you cannot entirely divorce the question of users' right to data from that of who decides what data are collected, and in how much depth. Yippee, I've got access to ... something that is so high level that only national accountants can make any use of it!
What kind of data are we talking about here? In the hosting industry, I use a substantial amount of data for customer research, and hardware/software research. There are some great uses for data, providing you have a great enough source.
I'll vote for postcode data to be released as open data. Too long have The Royal Mail held a monopoloy on postcode data. Just think of the applications and websites that could be made simpler, quicker and easier for people to use if postcode lookup become openly available. We are an online technology company that provides online conveyancing quotes for solicitors and conveyancers (http://www.theconveyancingnetwork.com/index.cfm/get-a-quote/) throughout the UK, so it would be valuable for us to speed up our quote process.
